Jeff Bezos Expands His Space Ambitions as Blue Origin Takes on New Projects

Jeff Bezos is continuing to expand his ambitions beyond Amazon as his aerospace company, Blue Origin, takes on new projects connected with rocket technology, the Moon and even future communications around Mars.

On September 14, Blue Origin announced an expanded partnership with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory. The cooperation is focused on advanced rocket-engine technologies and gives the company greater access to research capabilities at Edwards Air Force Base. The announcement comes as Blue Origin works to strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive commercial space industry.

Another important development came earlier in September, when NASA selected Blue Origin to develop and deliver a Mars Telecommunications Orbiter. The spacecraft is intended to contribute to a future communications network around Mars, potentially supporting scientific missions and other spacecraft operating near the planet.

The new projects follow a challenging period for Bezos’s space company. In May 2026, a New Glenn rocket was destroyed during pre-launch testing in Florida, creating a significant setback for the company’s launch schedule. Blue Origin subsequently said it intended to return the rocket to flight.

At the same time, Blue Origin has been shifting resources toward larger strategic projects. Earlier in 2026, the company announced that it would pause its New Shepard space-tourism flights for at least two years in order to accelerate work on human lunar capabilities.

Bezos has funded Blue Origin for years as part of his long-term vision for expanding human activity in space. The company’s latest projects suggest that its priorities are increasingly moving beyond short tourist flights toward heavy-lift rockets, lunar missions, advanced propulsion and deep-space infrastructure.

For Bezos, the next phase of his career may therefore be defined as much by space and advanced technology as by the online retail company that originally made him one of the world’s best-known entrepreneurs.
